The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Jail (JCSO) was built in 1980 and has been in continuous use for more than 40 years.

Multiple assessments have confirmed the building to be in very poor condition and at the end of its useful or serviceable life. The aging facility creates safety risks for staff and inmates and is increasingly expensive to maintain.

The Need

Independent assessments and state jail inspections have determined the Sheriff’s Office and Jail facility poses a risk to the safety and wellbeing of the hundreds of staff, inmates and members of the public occupying the jail everyday.

The Proposal

Johnson County has undertaken a yearslong process to gather input from the public, law enforcement, public health experts and justice advocates to guide the development of a new facility. That proposal can be viewed here.
